Hump Day Already? Old News!
I wrote about that last week. I might cover it later. Well, for those of you interested in history, we saw it made last night. Barack Obama became the first black, the first african-american man, to win the nomination of a major political party in the United States. As I watched this historical moment I could not help but to think of all those who have sacrificed and died in the past to make this possible. Personally, I'm glad it finally happened. In fact, whether it was Obama or Clinton, history would have been made. The election itself is a whole other story that I might comment on later. But for now, we need to bask in the history that has been made. Some say that the racial barrier has been broken. I say, it has a huge crack. There are people of all races that need to look at this moment as a victory for the poor, the oppressed, those that do not have a voice in our government today. When you have an opportunity, take a look back on the history of the civil rights movement. Though it may have been dominated by blacks, there were also prominent whites that were involved to get equal footing for ALL people in America. We as a people need to stop being disenfranchised. We need to fight for our rights and until our government finally listens, we need to do what we have always done. Write, call and live the American dream. Whether Obama or McCain become president doesn't really matter. What matters is that all those that are eligible need to be part of the process. Get out there and voice your concerns. Let the candidates know what worries you. Only then will they know how they have to act.
