Dinner Alone?

My wife and I love to go out and have dinner.  It is especially great when we've both had a hard day at work and need a break. We enjoy each other's company and especially the conversation.

Unfortunately, sometimes when we are having dinner we see others just eating dinner. Period. No talking. No conversing. Just eating and no talking.  How sad.

What is even sadder is when you're invited to eat dinner and the other person spends a lot of time on the telephone talking business.  This was the case this evening.  A father and a daugher were sitting close by. Almost as soon as they were seated, the father was on the phone having a business conversation with a fellow co-worker while his daughter sat there, being quite and polite. This continued for at least a good 20 minutes.  I wanted so much to get up and tell this father that he is missing out on so much while talking on the phone.

In my opinion, he was rude. To me, it bordered on selfishness and child abuse. He was literally ignoring his daughter.

Too bad she couldn't just get up and walk out.  I would have if he was my father.
